4. Functional Groups with Suffix Only

Most functional groups are named by using either a suffix or a prefix. However two functional groups are named almost exclusively as suffixes.

The two functional groups I deal with here are the C,C double bond and the C,C triple bond. In each case the group is named by changing the letter a in the suffix ane to e for the double bond and to y for the triple bond.

The structure and names of the two-carbon and the three-carbon compounds, together with the corresponding alkane are given in the table below:
